Abridged Chronology of the A-bomb Dome        
 
1910 December 13 Hiroshima Prefecture decides to construct the Hiroshima Prefectural Commercial Exhibition Hall.    
1913 July 21 The designer of the building, Jan Letzel, visits Hiroshima.    
1914 January  Commencement of construction on Hiroshima Prefectural Commercial Exhibition Hall    
1915 April 5  Construction on Hall completed. Becomes the 1st site for the Hiroshima Prefecture Promotion Fair held starting the same day to May 14.    
1915 August 15 Hiroshima Prefectural Products Exhibition Hall opens.    
1916 May 15 1st Hiroshima Prefectural Arts Exhibition is held.    
1921 January 1 Renamed the Hiroshima Prefectural Products Exhibition Hall.    
1933 November 1 Renamed the Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall.    
1934 April 1 Hall establishes representative offices in Dairen, Xinging and Harbin.    
1938 April 27 Hall establishes offices in Dairen, Fentiang, Xinging, Harbin, Tianjin, Shanghai and Kobe.    
1941 May Closes down Dairen office and five other overseas offices.    
1944 March 31 Work at Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall is halted.  Afterwards, building is used for government and control unions.    
1945 August 6  A-bomb explodes almost directly above the hall, creating extensive damage and fires that ravage the, building. Everyone inside was killed instantly.    
1947  Starting at this time debate about whether to destroy the A-bomb Dome or preserve it takes place.    
1949 August 6 Works are submitted for the design competition of the Hiroshima Peace  Memorial Park. Design for peace park with A-bomb Dome as centerpiece is set.    
1953 November 14 A-bomb Dome is donated to Hiroshima City by the Hiroshima Prefecture.    
1965 July 28 Surveys on reconstruction for reinforcement of the A-bomb Dome commence.     
1966 July 11 Resolution passed in the Hiroshima City Council to preserve the A-bomb Dome.    
1966 November 1 Fund-raising drive for funds to preserve the A-bomb Dome commences.    
1967 August 5 1st reconstruction of A-bomb Dome completed. 1983 March Establishment of square in vicinity of A-bomb Dome.    
1987 July 11 Surveys on reconstruction for reinforcement of the A-bomb Dome commence.     
1989 May 1 Fund-raising drive for funds to preserve the A-bomb Dome commences.    
1990 March 31 2nd reconstruction of A-bomb Dome completed.    
1992 September 29 Hiroshima City Council adopts the Opinion Paper for Registering the A-bomb Dome as a World Heritage site.    
1993 January 21 Hiroshima City presents request to national government.  
1993 June 7 Citizens groups form the Committee to Promote the A-bomb Dome as a World Heritage Site (A-bomb Dome Committee).     
1993 June 19 A-bomb Dome Committee launches signature campaign to petition Diet.  
1994 January 28 A-bomb Dome Committee petition accepted by House of Councilors.    
1994 June 29 A-bomb Dome Committee petition adopted by House of Representatives. (Total signatures =1,653,996)    
1994 July 6 Hiroshima City formally establishes the A-bomb Dome World Heritage Promotion Committee. (Tokyo Committee/Hiroshima Committee)    
1994 July 7 The Standing Committee on Education of the House of Councilors visits the A-bomb Dome.    
1994 November 25 Hiroshima City and the National Federation of UNESCO Associations in Japan hold the Tokyo Symposium.    
1995 March 6 Minister for Education revises criteria for historic site designation.    
1995 June 27 Minister for Education designates the Dome as a historic site under the Cultural Properties Protection Act.  
1995 September 6 The Standing Committee on Education of the House of Representatives visits the A-bomb Dome.    
1995 September 28 Japan nominates the A-bomb Dome to the World Heritage Committee for registration as a World Heritage site.    
1996 December 5 World Heritage Committee meeting in Merida, Mexico, decides to register the Dome on the World Heritage List.
